Here's the link to the matchable organizations.
The deadline for listings contributions is Dec. 31. But there are various limits on what contributions will be matched. Check out each funding area workspace for info.
Here's a link to the latest version of the matching plan as of 11-29-06.
Thomas and I are extremely impressed with the quality of the six proposals for the Q4 Funding Project and we recognize the huge amount of work involved. In addition to the collaboration by each set of core team members it was great to see others helping on the proposals including members of other teams. Thank you all.
It makes sense to us to build on this huge investment in a way that encourages further collaboration. We want to provide additional support that can include the three funding areas not selected in the voting process.
To accomplish this we plan to match contributions to non-profits organizations nominated in all of the six funding area proposals that qualfied. While the final decision on exactly how to do this will be ours, we’d like your advice to help us choose the best process.
We assume the process will be similar to our past matching efforts. For reference, here’s a link to the workspace for the earthquake relief match.
This question comes to mind first - "Should we match contributions to all (almost 30) nominated non-profits or focus the effort on a smaller number?"
Please post your ideas to this thread. I'll try to respond frequently and try to wrap things up by November 27 so that we can get make a formal announcement by December 1.

What wonderful news!
"Should we match contributions to all (almost 30) nominated non-profits or focus the effort on a smaller number?"
I think either all, or maybe those who don't receive the 5k. Matching for all would certainly be the easiest in terms of process.
Do you have a limited timeframe in mind?

I'd say match to any and all 30 off the top of my head.
There might need to be some per person or per npo cap...maybe.

We are thinking Omidyar Network would match contributions made in December 2006.

hmmm -- if you're matching donations, couldn't you do it on a case by case basis for each of the 30 proposals?

Fantastic, Haney. I really appreciate you asking for input before making your decision.

Yes, that is a possibility but perhaps, for example, the teams will want to focus on fewer than five. I'm assuming at least that for those nominees using a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, that someone from the team will have to check to make sure the sponsoring organization is up for managining a number of smaller checks.

That's a terrific proposal!
The Earthquake matching added over $28,000 in Omidyar matched funding last year. If this were repeated this year, and all 30 projects were included, that could mean on average almost an extra $1000 per project!
I think it would be fairest to included all the projects, not just the 21 'losers'.
Long live the men in white coats! ;)

This is terrific -- I love the flavor of this approach and echo Ted's sentiments. Thank you for hearing the grumblings and coming back with an invitation to some further productive dialogue. And for recognizing the contributions of all the proposals as of high value.
And I am a little confused. Could you clarify for me what exactly O.net is matching?
I read it several ways:
- ON (the 'foundation') will match the O.net allocated grant made to the 'winning' organizations with an equal contribution to those that do not win (in essence, all win)
- ON will, in essence, double the grant to the winning organizations
- ON will double the grant to the winning organization and provide a $5k grant to the non-winning organizations
- ON will match whatever the organizations are able to raise within O.net (if some are already fundraising, I don't know)
- ON doesn't know, but is willing to double its investment and will consider ways the network would like to shape that match?
Thanks, and sorry to be a bar behind!

Sorry for the confusion.
Omidyar Network is the source of the funding for the basic Q4 Funding Project's grants ($45,000) as well as a to-be-determined amount that will match contributions by others to non-profits already nominated.
Omidyar Network won't match it's own grants - only contributions made by others.

Haney, thanks for trying to clarify. Contributions made by others means contributions received by an organization during the month of December '06. Now, these contributions, do they have to be affiliated with O-net somehow?
I smell more cheese!! ;)

Based on our previous matching programs, we would only require the contributor to sign up for omidyar.net and list their contribution in a workspace.

Haney,
As I understand it, the model is to be last December's matching - as you say in your introduction to this thread?
I just get a bit worried when I find that even a clear thinker like Lars sees there may be some ambiguity.
:)

Right, we are using last December's match as a model. I'll be in and out all day to clarify anything I can.

i think the ambiguity could be solved by getting me some glasses ;) just kidding: what's important to know is something to the effect of,
ON is considering ways to match contributions raised in December by all Q4 nominated NPOs.
